Apple dissected what’s new in the upcoming iOS 11 release during its WWDC 2017 keynote. And among the highlights (there were so many highlights), users can get excited about a refreshed control center, Apple Pay that enables peer-to-peer payments, smarter notifications thanks to Siri and much more.

But arguably, the best part of the iOS 11 announcement was hearing that it will be available very soon. Like, today, for some. But read along to find out if you should download now or wait for the stable release, which will launch in autumn alongside the iPhone 8. 

How to download iOS 11 developer preview 

iOS 11 is available in developer preview today for those enrolled in Apple’s developer program. If you aren’t a member, the service costs $99  (about £69, AU$140) annually. For those who need to fine-tune their apps for the new software, updating your device makes a bunch of sense. 

However, if you aren't experienced, be cautious before you install it on your daily driver. Early software tends to be filled with bugs and your device will likely not behave as you’re used to with finalized software. Plus, are you really going to pay $99 just to test iOS 11 early? 

How to download iOS 11 beta

In the coming weeks, Apple will make the beta of iOS 11 available to the greater public. Enrolling in Apple’s beta program is totally free and you can do so right here. Once it becomes available, you’ll get a notification about installing the new iOS software.

Keep in mind that, like the developer preview, this release won’t be bug-free, though it will likely be more reliable. Still, it may not be the best choice if stability is top of mind for you.

Lastly, in order to download the software, your device will need to be compatible. If you own an iPhone 5 or earlier, you’re out of luck sadly. iOS 11 only works with the iPhone 5S and later, all iPad Air and iPad Pro models, iPad 5th generation, iPad mini 2 and later and iPod touch 6th generation.
